Why Do Dogs Lick Their Butts?

Another behaviour that keeps pet owners wondering includes - why do dogs lick their buts.

1. General Grooming

One reason could be that it can be for grooming purposes. Both cats and dogs lick themselves for grooming and their anal area isn’t an exception. Since they don’t have the means for cleaning such as water or toilet paper, they lick themselves to get rid of any fecal matter left.

2. Anal Issue

Another factor might be an issue they might be having. Dogs have two anal sacs, which secrete a fluid that aids in identifying their own territory and warding off predators. While all dogs release this fluid at every defecation, occasionally the glands can manufacture liquid and cause a build-up, necessitating a trip to the veterinarian.

As a result, you must visit a veterinarian if you notice that -

  • your dog is excessively licking its butt;
  • that the behaviour is accompanied by an unpleasant odour.
